Google Gemini sits inside Google Workspace. On Business Standard (US$14/user/mo annual) and above, it works across Docs, Sheets, Slides, Meet, and Drive. On Business Starter, it is limited to Gmail. Google contractually states it does not use Workspace core-service data to train generative AI models without permission.
The Connected Apps are the third-party services Gemini can interact with. The 12 August 2026 drop is the clearest single piece of evidence for where the platforms are headed: Granola and Otter.ai are genuinely useful to a business. Then the list runs Fever, GetYourGuide, Localiza, OpenTable (UK), Ticketmaster, iHeartRadio, Pandora, Angi, Thumbtack, Zocdoc.
Restaurant bookings, concert tickets, home services, music streaming.
The Workspace layer is real and useful. The Connected Apps layer is built for a life, not for a business.

What it does well
Works inside the Workspace apps the reader already uses every day. Gemini in Docs drafts from context. Gemini in Sheets suggests formulas and summarizes ranges. Gemini in Meet takes notes. The AI is inside the tool, not beside it, which means the reader does not switch windows to use it.
Granola and Otter.ai make meetings useful after they end. Granola structures meeting notes with action items. Otter.ai transcribes and summarizes. Both are Connected Apps that do something a 20-person operation actually needs: the meeting that happened at 10 a.m. is findable and actionable by 10:15.
Handles the Workspace file layer with no extra setup. Gmail, Calendar, Docs, Drive, Sheets, Keep, Tasks. The Gemini app can read across all of these on Business Standard and above, and the connection is already there because the reader already pays for the Workspace plan.
What it cannot reach
The 12 August 2026 Connected Apps drop tells the story. Quote the list:

Two of those are useful to a business (Granola, Otter.ai). The rest are consumer services. Restaurant bookings, concert tickets, vacation planning, music streaming, home services.
Now check for the software that runs a working operation:

Zocdoc is the interesting entry for clinics. Patient booking is on the Connected Apps list. A clinic’s actual practice management software is not. The connector reaches the booking surface; the clinical records, scheduling, and charting remain outside it.
Your data, and who sees it
Google contractually states it does not use Workspace core-service data to train generative AI models without permission. For Business plans, Gemini is a core service covered under the existing data processing agreement.
Admin controls are available in the Google Admin Console: Gemini app access and feature toggles, conversation history retention (90, 540, 1,080 days, or indefinite), and Gemini Alpha features enrollment.
The Connected Apps are separate from Workspace. When a Connected App accesses data, the terms of the Connected App provider apply alongside Google’s. For a clinic connecting Zocdoc through Gemini, the data handling is governed by Zocdoc’s terms as well as Google’s.

The Workspace plan includes Gemini. The Connected Apps are available through the Gemini app at no extra charge. The question for an Island operator already on Workspace is whether the plan is Standard or Starter, because that determines whether Gemini reaches Drive and Docs or only Gmail.

Where it stops, and what sits past it
Gemini reaches the Workspace layer and a growing list of consumer Connected Apps. The operational software that runs the day-to-day of a specific vertical sits outside both.
The reader who already pays for Google Workspace, already uses Drive and Docs, and wants to know whether Gemini covers their operational systems has a clear answer: it covers the file and communication layer, it covers meetings (with Granola and Otter.ai), and it does not cover the job board, the chart notes, the matter file, or the ledger.
Past the boundary, the same three routes as every other platform:
- The vendor’s own AI. Some operational vendors ship their own assistant. Check the vendor first.
- Export and work on the copy. Export the data, bring it into a Workspace file, and let Gemini work on it there. A snapshot, not a live connection.
- Build the connection. A purpose-built integration. That is what workflow automation and AI development produce.
